Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.

An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

Slow at first but gets really interesting. I felt there could’ve been improvements by not including certain scene. But overall, great book.

Personally, I thought the deep dive into the main female character was overwrought, repetitive, and contrived. Like yeah, we get it. She’s quirky and lacks confidence. Move on. The story was decent, but somehow unsatisfying. Still, a so-so King book is better than most things you find in the airport newsstand!

Boring! What has happened to Mr. King’s imagination?

It isn’t a scary King book but it has all the right characters and the one evil person. It kept my interest throughout but you knew how it was going to end. Excellently written.

It takes almost 200 pages before the book gets going. Because it was Stephen King, I stuck it out. It's a great read after the first 200 pages.

Just Stephen King doing Stephen King stuff! Great book! Characterization is outstanding, but don't read if you chew your nails, you'll make them bleed. It's terror without being afraid, it's the not knowing what's going on but kind of peeking at it. It's like when you were a kid and asleep and dreamed that you heard steps and when you opened your eyes could not but did as soon as you closed them again... Yes, terror without knowing why!

Once again, King does not disappoint! Well written story that I could not put down. The characters come alive and you feel like you know them. Keep writing

Like a fine wine Stephen King’s writing just gets better with time. Honestly, it’s been awhile since I’ve read one of his and it’s been a joy. I think Wait to read his books on purpose so I can savor all of the nuances and work he puts into his project. It makes me feel like a kid at Christmas (which is a very weird thing to say about a SK book.) King’s latest is very much a police procedural with a psychological drama twist. And of course, a dab of horror! Seeing as though those genres are favs of mine, I was ecstatic when King started telling his latest story in that style, and he didn’t disappoint. There is just nobody that writes like the intelligent guy-next-door like him. I highly recommend you read this!

Big Stephen king fan, but unfortunately this is not one of his best, great intriguing start that takes a dramatic turn and fizzles and fades into below average fare.
