They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

To say this book is bad, or simply poorly written, would be a lie. It was written well, and I can't criticize the author in her art. But, if you are someone who has read many many fantasy novels before, I would say this may not satisfy you. I've gone through so many books, very similar to this one, that it left me rather bored. Another problem I had with it, was my dislike for the main characters. I never felt a personal connection to them, and almost felt annoyed with Zelie. Simply because she was a very typical main character. Everything about her doesn't make me sympathize with her, even despite her unfortunate history. I can't seem to find the will to care for her. I found myself mentally groaning to myself, every time the perspective switched to hers. In conclusion, this book just wasn't for me. But that's not to say it's a bad book. I highly enjoyed how the author included the entire culture and politics of this new world of theirs. I just feel as though she could have done better with portraying the characters.
  • Beyond amazing.

My initial thought in purchasing this book was simply to support a black author. But this book far surpassed all my expectations. It is in league with Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings, yet culturally responsible. I absolutely LOVE this book and I am looking forward to the 2nd installment.

I loved this story. It was a thrilling page turner that had me on edge every few pages! This is a wonderful addition to the fantasy world and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves! I felt like I did when I was reading The Hunger Games, or perhaps Octavia Butler’s Kindred! Great job, Ms. Adeyemi!

As a die hard book nerd who has hit a reading block, this book has thrown me back into what it is like to fall in love with a book. I cannot believe that it is over as quickly as it began. This story brought forth so many emotions of my own and I really hope Tomi Adeyemi continues writing incredible stories such as this one, because I will buy each and every one of her books until I can no longer bear the weight of the books. I absolutely loved this book! Please read it!
